I love live theater! There is just something so magical about getting to watch a story unfold, full of emotion and taking that journey with the actors. If I had to choose, I'm probably more partial to musical theater, as opposed to straight plays (which I still love), as I find the music can add so much to the story and the moments on stage. And when I'm editing theater photos, I almost always listen to the soundtrack from that show.
When both of my kids decided to audition for a theater production at our local park district at age 8, it set us on a new path into the beautiful world of live theater. My son, Peyton, ended up performing in his first professional theater production at age 10 and has gone on to do more shows at various theaters around Chicago. It's put us in the path of so many amazing people and experiences and memories for our memory bank.
Along the way, I discovered a true love for theater photography. I was fortunate enough to have several opportunities to practice when I first started out, mostly at our local park district and then at a few other community productions Peyton was in. I learned from my mistakes and got better. And now I have several theaters I shoot for on a regular basis and I love every minute of it! For me, it's just all this emotion up on stage for the taking through my lens. I love those moments that make you simply catch your breath. And you can relive them over and over through the images.
This was the first time I was lucky enough to shoot for BoHo Theatre and I was absolutely thrilled. I couldn't possibly adore their Artistic Director, Stephen Schellhardt, any more. I've known Stephen for the past 5 years and he is just a stellar human. The stars finally aligned to allow us to work together. The whole production team is excellent and the talent up on that stage is simply ridiculous. BoHo Theatre's presentation of Big Fishmade me laugh and cry and think of my own dad and relationships in my life that I cherish.
Here's a peek into the production. But don't just settle for these photos. Go experience the show in all it's beauty, running from September 29th - November 17th at The Greenhouse Theater Center in Lincoln Park in Chicago!
