When I first got bitten by the photography bug, I wanted to photograph and document absolutely everything. EV-ER-Y-THING. And while that urge has been somewhat tamed (although not completely), there's still nothing quite like capturing light or objects in a way that make me happy and give me a momentary high. It's almost impossible for me to ignore amazing light. Did you know that the word Photography means "writing with light"? Kinda cool, huh?
It's been a long time in the works but I finally, FINALLY, got some of my more favorite images in a gallery on my website, where you can purchase wall art. I even have a handful of the same images on notecards.
That image at the top of this post is the Hogwarts Express - the actual train used in the Harry Potter movies! It's real name is the Jacobite steam train and it travels back and forth between Fort William and Mallaig. I photographed this from a hill across the way from the Glenfinnan Viaduct in Scotland. I may or may not have yelled in excitement when that steam started pumping out of the locomotive! Any other Harry Potter fans out there?
Coffee is another love of mine. But, I should clarify. I've spent most of my life claiming to not be a coffee drinker. Lattes and other flavored "foofy" coffees are really what I love. If it actually tastes like coffee, I'm not a big fan. Go figure! And, if I go even further, it's really the coffee SHOPS that I love, more so than the actual drink itself. I love the atmosphere, the people, the whole vibe of a coffee shop. I love bringing my laptop, working on images and talking to random strangers. (If you know me well, you know that's not an unusual thing).
One thing I've learned over the years is this: When you see a great photo opportunity, don't put it off. Do it NOW. When you wait, the light will change, the icicles will melt, the moment will be lost. Have you seen this You Are Beautiful sign anywhere in your travels? I've seen it in multiple places and love it every single time. On this particular day, I had just dropped my son off for rehearsal for Billy Elliot in Chicago. As I pulled into the parking lot, I noticed the light hitting these letters in a way that made them glow. It was now or never. So I crossed the street. And I waited for the cars to all pass. And this image was my inspiration for my You Are Beautiful Sessions (which you can read about HERE) that I hope to resume one day, after the world is a bit back to normal.
It wasn't until recently that I realized the title of "Three Ducks" wouldn't work for this photo. How did I not see that from the beginning?! Ha!
I have a huge bleeding heart for animals. I'm partial to cats and have 2 of my own who keep us laughing with their antics! But, unless you are a crazy cat lady like me, I'm not sure everyone else would appreciate a gallery full of JUST CATS. So, there are a few different species in there!
Light, light and more light. You might even say I'm a bit obsessed with weeds and light....well, any sort of leaves with backlighting. I can never get enough. That and a shallow depth of field with buds and flowers and berries get me every time. Shallow depth of field is that effect where the main object is in focus and everything behind it is blurred out. It's what first got me hooked into photography and the thing other people mention the most.
Finally, I wanted to do something with my photographs that people could use. Soooo, Voila! I created a notecards with some of the images on them. It's been fun to package these up and send them out. Thank you to everyone who has supported me already!
If you are so inclined to visit my art store and shop locaal, click on the button below and it will transport you right there. Take a look around. I have three different wall print options for each image but I'm always happy to do custom products and sizes! Notecards are sold in sets of 12. If you've seen an image from me in the past that you'd like to have on a notecard, I'm happy to create those as well. It just requires a mini order of 24 cards.
Thanks for sticking with me through this whole post! There are so many more images in the store...have fun exploring!
